Ludwig & Ludwig, home of the Ludwig Black Beauty snare drum, was formed in 1909 by brothers William F. Ludwig and Theo. The brothers began their innovative design in a single garage in Chicago, with their first innovation is a kick pedal that was faster and far superior to all that exists at the time.

In 1916, the brothers took the action of a spring that became the basis for balanced current Action Pedal Timpani.

In the mid-1920s, the brothers have become famous for producing some of the worlds finest ukulele-banjos, always prized among collectors today.

When the Great Depression of the 1930s hit, the company merged with CG Conn Company, but William was not happy with the new structure and left in 1936, forming his own company, the WFL Drum Company, with the famous Speed King pedal is one of the first products designed, which is still manufactured today by Ludwig.

Ludwig was bought by Conn in 1955 and revived by the Ludwig Drum Company.

The new company struggled for almost 10 years until 1963 when a group emerges Liverpool, The Beatles, by chance on a kit in a showcase in London. The group walked through London, where Ringo spotted the kit and the thunderbolt.

After appearing on the Ed Sullivan show with her new kit and this newspaper on the famous Ludwig bass drum, sales have skyrocketed.

In 1966, Success purchased now Ludwig Musser Marimba Company and as a sign of gratitude to change their fortunes Ringo, Ringo endowed with a gold plated case clear.

Led Zeppelin John "Bonzo" Bonham was the drummer next superstar to use Ludwig drums. His famous orange color Vistalite drum 1970 is synonymous with rock drums. Vistalite was the trade name used by Ludwig's line of acrylic drums in the 1970s.

After his father died in 1973, William F. Ludwig, Jr. took the reins of the company and eventually became part of the Selmer Company in 1981.

From that first day in the barn in Chicago, the company has always been at the forefront of innovation, the introduction of many materials not thought previously in the manufacturing drum. In addition to the battery Vistalite, the company also constructed of stainless steel drum kits, but because of manufacturing costs high, ceased production in early 1980.

The now famous and most wanted the snare drum, the Ludwig Black Beauty was first built in the 1920s. The Ludwig Black Beauty snare drum, a hand-engraved shell black nickel-plated brass drum is very prized by collectors and players. The Black Beauty has been reissued, available or not engraved or machine engraved, in the late 1970 and republished again in the 1990s.

When the Ludwig Black Beauty snare has been reintroduced in the late 1970s, they were new brass. As a company changes ownership in the early 1980s the bronze drum switch was done for economic reasons.
