Entertainment for the oligarchy
After playing games like Yu-Gi-Oh! Since 2004, the main players to watch in these games has not changed much. When I started playing Yu-Gi-Oh! the tournament scene has been largely covered by a site called meta-game, and players are important to look at names such as Anthony Alvarado, Chris Bowling, Adam and corn. In 2007, the same exact names were still Featured nominated by metagame. In three years, the scene never changed. The reason is simple: Yu-Gi-Oh! is a game for the rich. It has always been and will forever.
I'm not saying you can not be middle class and have fun playing these games. I say if you want to be competitive, you get money - lots of money - and it's not fair to most people.
Rectangular paper $ 1000
I remember in 2006, while browsing Yu-Gi-Oh! cards on eBay (mainly because my card for local businesses have never had the "rare" cards I was looking), I found a Crush Card Virus on sale for $ 1000. The images were real (the Guy has his name on a sheet of paper next card) and the card game showed that it was an official map CMP tournament prize. But $ 1000? Really?
With $ 1,000 you could buy a respectable computer games, or a decent bike. But since a card like this was so hard to get the sale price because it was 1000 $, And I doubt that any child of the middle class would be able to afford it, much less win (from a platform-robin competition in general ran $ 1,500 +).
Today, the scene is much cheaper but still expensive. Tournament-worthy decks generally run at least $ 500 (And do not tell me Gadgets, because the bridges are not tournament worthy gadget more), which is still a good deal for the average Yu-Gi-Oh! player.
The Good Stuff is already gone
Despite the guarantee by rare package, changes to obtain a card tournament worthy rare is very unlikely due to the fact that dealers often used the bridge box testing methods to determine where the cards have been more rare before selling the packs. An example of this is heavy backpack - a heavier pack is a sign of a rare card, simply because most cards are more rare holographic and weigh more than average "rare" cards. Thus, buying a pack online or in the store almost always meant that you would receive only a poor "rare" card, and if some cards have been absolutely crucial to your terrace, you had to resort to other methods more expensive as buying off eBay or through a reseller of cards.
Some may argue that This is a marketing ploy, keeping supply low while demand is high. However, the truth is that Konami did not really know what cards are good and what cards are not. These "standards" set by the players, and the senior players and sellers are those who are really out benefit from this economic imbalance. Basically, the rich get richer and remain competitive, while the poor get poorer and retain sinking lower than the new packages are introduced, involving new "good" cards to be determined after a tournament (at the time, a tournament that was happening somewhere in the United States each week).
Most cards Suck
The truth is, Konami does not test its cards, and Wizards of the Coast is. In fact, rare cards are determined by the sole fact that they have a great effect that makes them appear a lot better than other cards. In contrast, companies videogame test their games before releasing them. Why should be card games otherwise? Instead, Konami produced a worthless pile of cards containing only an image and the values of attack / defense. Virtually all cards used in a competitive tournament has an effect. Therefore, all these cards to order effects are simply discarded as waste paper. In fact, I tried to sell them all at once a shop and they do not take them.
So in all, your backpack $ 5.00 gets you:
* 1 "Rare" card, which is more than likely will not be competitive
* 8 cards, with 60% of them are probably worthless
So in reality it is a little less than $ 1.00 per card. A bit expensive for a bunch of uncompetitive cards, but perfectly fine if all you want to do is to have a little fun, right?
This does not mean Konami is still very effective with Yu-Gi-Oh! The packs are still clearly a scam. So what is the solution? For the most part, is to embrace the fact that increasingly have both a computer and Internet access:
1. Go Virtual. In the absence of packets of "random" to purchase, users will be able to simply browse a database of maps to buy online maps and build a virtual bridge.
2. Real-time online games. This solves the problem of locating the tournament, as users would simply need access to a computer connected to the Internet to play games.
A positive side effect of this game revolves around balance. As all cards are virtual, errata can be easily changed on-line to make them more or less competitive, thus balance the game without having to reprint thousands of mass physical maps.
In regards to what is said above, there is a virtual card game production currently working to resolve the problems I outlined above. At the time of writing, most of the illustrations in this game is currently still in production.
