First Act

BOTTOM LINE: long and complex and misguided historical drama which, despite its good intentions, great ideas and solid acting, not just never really together to drive the nail.

THE GOOD: Atonement begins with the titles being literally tapped on the screen by a typewriter. This plays to the main theme of the allegedly central Briony Tallis who wrote his first play. With first act, 13 years old Briony tells a lie surprising (powered by jealousy due to a crushing losses) as the son of their house-keeper Robbie (James McAvoy), his cousin raped in the bushes one night while he was a friend of his rich brother. Consequently, Robbie is sent to Prison and later to serve in the army during WW2. Robbie and Cecilia (Keira Knightley) have been secretly in love and following her sister's actions Briony, Cecelia is separated from Robbie, and Robbie is forced to endure a hard life to prison for a crime he did not commit.

From this solid base, the film covers topics and strong ideas about what happened to the relationship and their responsibilities each other. "Atonement" also includes flashy techniques, including times when he goes back and forth in time to follow the same moments from the viewpoints of different characters, different uses of typewriter (sound, image etc.) that Briony comes to terms with what she has done and how she came to write about it, and some spectacular images. There is a photo when Robbie is at war, a Steadicam shot that lasts about five uncut minutes must be one of the most impressive sequences staged, not to mention complicated ever staged (although "Snake Eyes" and "The Player" probably top it). The film also ends in a strange and unexpected ways that could well have made a unique and brilliant film, essentially suggesting that what we saw was all out of Briony's typewriter rather than being real. However ...

THE BAD: The film is just not well served, but its script, and therefore management. The first act, which really should come to be about 10 minutes came out inflated to 30 minutes and did not really support that length of time. The next 30 minutes are not much better than we follow through the sequence Robbie WW2. It's supposed to be a film about Briony's atonement for his sin, and yet half of the film is not even focus on it! This is a clear history of Briony, but after the first five minutes, the story follows and Cecelia Robbie directly with the history of the War of Robbie to take the film far away from Briony.

In fact, the history of war does not Robbie except for him pining for his lost love who, after a while becomes very tedious. And then she moves back in the second Briony half of the film. It is then played by two actresses of news and make sure we do not confuse them as an audience, the filmmakers chose to keep the same haircut for his entire life. And what does it do to atone for his sins? She wrote a book where Cecelia and Robbie have a happy ending. She admits she has not had the courage to always face Cecelia again and besides that both Cecelia and Robbie died before he could get back together. Knowing all this, this is simply odious, especially since the character of Briony did not really see the end that she is sorry for what she did.
