A MIDI controller does not have a generation module sounds in it and is used only to send MIDI messages to external software / hardware.
So how is it useful if it can not generate sounds on its own? It is useful if you have a configuration essentially based recording software. If you use a software sequencer for sequencing tracks, and if your instrument sounds are generated using synthesizers and VST soft, then you need a keyboard command. Simply connect the keyboard controller to a computer or laptop, which has all the necessary software.
It is not necessary for you to go to a full numeric keypad on its own. A MIDI controller be able to send all messages related performance software. The keypad will send MIDI messages to save all the parameters related to performance.
