19 "enclosures or frames are normalized, they are specially designed to accommodate electronic modules (modules). Each module has a front panel that is exactly 480mm (19 inches) wide, size also includes all the edges that are used to attach the module to the frame of the grid.
The type of equipment that is specifically designed to go in these systems are normally called rack-mount or rack mount system.
These units are sometimes referred to as "relay racks, because they came as mounting systems relay signaling railways. Although the unit does and the size of 19 inches has remained constant over time because the equipment that is made has changed radically.
The most common areas, you will find 19-inch electronic racks in use are:
- Computers
- Telecommunications
- Entertainment
- Audio
When used for equipment audio, it is only in a professional, you will not walk into someone's house and find an electronic 19-inch rack, they will found that in industries with professional amplifiers, interfaces, effects units and small-scale audio mixers.
In a sense, these computers are also likely to be found in a house, unless you work from home and require a big server. More generally based industrial units are used to house computer equipment, servers, allowing for hardware dense but all confined in a small space without ground wire through the floor space.
Western electronic racks are available in a size different than 23 inches.
