2112
Main article: 2112 (song)
Opening
Of Album 2112, "Overture" opens one of the suites concept of Rush. Geddy Lee's voice is recorded as an instrument in the early parts of the song, as he sings no words. However, there is, despite all of Overture instrumental nature, a single line sung at the end, the piece transitions to "The Temples of Syrinx": "And the meek shall inherit the earth." As some openings, music of the opening 2112 is repeated or developed in other places in the sequel like "The Temples of Syrinx" and "Oracle: The Dream".
Grand Finale
This section includes the following few lines spoken (not sung) at the end with the phrase repeated three times: "Attention all planets Federation Solar. We have assumed control "
Villa La Strangiato
From the album Hemispheres, it was the first entirely instrumental piece Rush, pointing to nearly ten minutes (9:37). The instrumental subtitle is "an exercise in self-indulgence". The song in several parts was inspired by a guitarist Alex Lifeson had dreams, and the music in these sections correspond to the occurrences in his dream. The opening segment was played on a guitar, nylon-string classical, while the live versions were played on an electric guitar. The next segment presents the main theme of La Villa, the theme Strangiato. The song progresses to include a guitar solo increasingly complex supported by string synthesizer, followed closely by bass and percussion. The theme Strangiato is reviewed before the song ends abruptly with phased bass and drums. The song is divided as follows:
I "! Buenos Noches, Mein Froinds "- (0:00)
II: "To sleep, perhaps to dream ... "- (0:27)
III: "The theme of Strangiato" - (2:00)
IV: "A Lerxst in Wonderland" - (3:16)
V: "Monsters!" - (5:49)
VI: "The Phantom of the Aragon" - (6:10)
VII: "Danforth and Pape" - (6:45)
VIII: "The Waltz of the Shreves" - (7:26)
IX: "Never turn your back on a monster!" - (7:52)
X: "Monsters (Reprise)" - (8:03)
XI: "Strangiato theme (Reprise)" - (8:17)
XII: "A Farewell to things "- (9:20)
Live versions of "La Villa Strangiato" often made certain changes. For example, Exit ... Stage Left, Lee plays the role of "Monsters" (Reprise) "as a bass solo. For more recent hits, as documented on Rush in Rio, a drum / bass vamp is inserted before "Strangiato Theme (Reprise)", on which Lifeson made a stream of consciousness rant. The introduction of classical guitar is played or electric guitar, or more commonly, cut completely.
According to Lee, "We had 'Strangiato recording more time that the entire Fly By Night album. He recorded in one take, but it took 40 takes to get it right! It was our first song without voice all. Thus, each section had to stand up with a theme and musical structure of its own. "
"The Villa Strangiato" translates roughly to "Strange Village" or "Weird City".
YYZ
Main article: YYZ (song)
From the album Moving Pictures. "YYZ" (pronounced why-why-zed natively) is the airport code for Toronto International Airport, and the instrumental opens with a rate of 5 / 4 which is Morse code for "YYZ" (-.-- --..). -.-- The piece has evolved into a drum solo / bass during the 1980s. "YYZ" was the first of five songs Rush (more than three decades) to be nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Performance rock instrumental.
Where's My Thing?
From the roll album Bones. "Gangster of Boats" comes from the continuing threat of Lee and Lifeson as an album Gangster boat and was never a true "concept" in the same way that Rush "Fear" trilogy. "Where's My Thing?" It was their second song nominated for a Grammy Award in 1991, losing to Eric Johnson "Cliffs of Dover. "The song is much more pop-like than the rest of the work of Rush, with an upbeat tempo and a line of synth brass, etc..
Leave That Thing Alone
From the album counterparts. During the homologous Test for Echo and Vapor Trails tours, and presented on various stages and Rush in Rio live album, "Leave That Thing single" preceded Peart drum solo and played with an extension ending showcase Lee bass work. This track The third song was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1994, losing to Pink Floyd "Marooned".
Limbo
Test the album Echo. Since the 2112 "Overture," "Limbo" features Lee's voice, however, his voice is used as an instrument, he does not sing all the words. The song also includes samples of Bobby "Boris" Pickett oldie "The Monster Mash" "What happened to my Transylvania tour" and "Ahh, Mash Good!".
"The Main Monkey Business," "Hope" and "malignant narcissism"
Rush album Snakes & Arrows Rush album is first to be equipped with multiple instrumental tracks: "The Main Monkey Business, "" Hope "and" malignant narcissism ". The first," The Main Monkey Business "is a little over six minutes. As with " Limbo "and" 2112 Overture ", Lee's voice is used as an instrument, no words are sung. The other two songs," Hope "and "Malignant narcissism", are the two shortest songs ever recorded by Rush to just over two minutes. It was a distinction already held (excluding short sections of multi-parted songs like "2112" and "La Villa Strangiato") by the short track "Need Some Love "on the Rush album." Hope "is a solo guitar piece written by Lifeson." Malignant Narcissism "features Lee a fretless bass and Peart on a four-piece drum kit. "Malignant Narcissism" dialog contains the voice of a woman, "Usually a case of narcissism Malignant brought on in childhood. "The last word in the phrase is repeated, each time lower than the previous one. The term itself comes from the movie Team America: World Police, made by the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone. "Malignant Narcissism" has become instrumental fifth to be nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2008, losing to Bruce Springsteen "Once Upon. A Time In The West "Hope has become the sixth to be played nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2009, the Songs For Tibet: The Art of Peace Rush album that has contributed to a live version of the song.
Live Performances & Recordings
Broon's Bane
Find the Exit ... Stage Left live album, "Broon Bane" is an arrangement of classical guitar played by the short Lifeson as an extended intro to "The Trees". The song is named after Terry Brown (Brown is also referred to as "TC Broonsie" during the intro Jacob's Ladder) that produced Exit ... Stage Left Rush albums and ten others. [Citation needed] It is not on any other live or studio recording Rush. The song is repeated and built on the same line three times, coming to a head about a minute into the room without prior chained interruption, "Trees".
Cygnus X-1 (Live Recordings)
On the live album Rush in Rio, an abridged version Cygnus X-1 is performed as an instrumental. The play contains themes of 1:26 to 4:59 in the recording studio room, slightly shortened by about twenty seconds. In other words, he understands the game prologue without words. In addition, the keyboard synthesizer heard in the recording studio is replaced by a synthesized voice played by Lee with more pedals. It's the same extract of the play performed as part of the Opening R30.
R30 Overture
The opening song of the 2004 Rush concert featuring a combination of instrumental sections one song from each of the first band of six albums.
The songs featured in the mix are:
"Find My Way (Rush)
"Anthem" (Fly by Night)
"Bastille Day" (Caress of Steel)
"A Passage to Bangkok" (2112)
"Cygnus X-1 Prologue (A Farewell to Kings)
"Prelude Hemispheres (Hemispheres)
Neil Peart drum solos
A basic highlight concerts Rush is a drum solo by Neil Peart. These solos are summer is featured on every live album released by the group. On the first live album (All the world's a stage and Exit ... Stage Left), the drum solo was included as part of a song ("Working Man / Search My Way" and " YYZ, "respectively). On all subsequent albums live, the drum solo was included on a separate track. On A Show of Hands and the different stages the drum solos were entitled "The Rhythm Method" (a pun on the form of birth control); on Rush in Rio, it was titled " O baterista. "On the R30 Live In Frankfurt, it was titled" Der Trommler "Rush The most recent live album, Snakes & Arrows Live, it is entitled "Slagwerker", and is coupled with "malignant narcissism" on the track-list. "O baterista" was the fourth song nominated for a Grammy in 2004, losing to Brian Wilson "Mrs. O'Leary Cow."
The titles "O baterista", "Der Trommler" and "De Slagwerker" all translate "The Drummer" in Portuguese, German and Dutch, respectively.
Peart drum solos all understand a basic framework of routines connected by sections of improvisation, leaving each unique performance. Each successive tour sees the solo more advanced, with routines abandoned in favor of new, more complex. Since the mid 1980-end Peart has used MIDI drum pads to trigger sounds sampled from various pieces of acoustic percussion that would otherwise consume too much stage space like a marimba, harp, temple blocks, triangles, glockenspiel, orchestra bells, tubular bells, slap and vibration as well as other, more esoteric percussion. Some purely electronic sounds, description that defies the laws are also used. All are built into each drum solo.
Each Peart solo since 1987-88 has included excerpts marimba "Pieces of Eight", a piece that appeared as a record of the flexi disc in May 1987 issue of Modern Drummer magazine. In addition, since all the solos 1991 have contained portions marimba Peart another composition entitled "Momo's Dance Party" and those from 1991 to 2004 presented a complex pattern the song "Scars" (As heard on the studio album Presto). For the Vapor Trails and R30 circuits, each concluded with a solo section of the standard Count Basie "One O'Clock Jump", which recorded Peart, while producing Burning For Buddy, a tribute album in two volumes in the legendary drummer large and conductor, Buddy Rich. Leg of the Tour 2007 and 2008 Snakes & Arrows, Peart replaced the final with a sample of "Cotton Tail", which recorded with the Buddy Rich Band in the mid-1990s. This was the only round in which the length of his solo decreased compared to the previous tour.
