While it is possible to find a cheaper roll up piano with fewer features, you will regret that decision almost immediately. Even though the main lure of a roll up keyboard is the portability, if the keys don't work or you have limited options, you won't have as much fun.

After you find a few models fitting your budget and MIDI requirements, you need to check the voices. You can find tone samples online with the reviews. Choose a keyboard that has realistic tones. Fewer good tones are better than too many bad tones. You probably want good electric piano, grand piano, rotary organ, and synthesizer tones. A better selection includes bass guitar, flute, strings, and horns. Usually these units are monophonic, meaning you cannot play chords. You can only play one note at a time.

While there are inexpensive models with only a three octave range for learners, the more professional models are meant to serve well.
