Kids everywhere are heading back to school and their teachers and parents are looking for the best value they can get on supplies for the classroom. There are two tools that every classroom should have and yet they are often overlooked. A good thermal laminator and a quality pencil sharpener are items that will come in handy again and again throughout the course of a school year.
Plastic pencil sharpeners are not a good choice because they are easily broken especially when they are used in classrooms for the lowest grades.
Most elementary school teachers agree that the Panasonic KP-380 is the best sharpener on the market right now. Suction cup feet will hold the sharpener firmly in place on a number of different types of surfaces.Internal sensors will shut the sharpener off when the pencil point is sharp, so it delivers a consistent result every time it is used.
Some educators prefer a sharpener made by Boston which is a self-feeding sharpener that can be vacuum mounted. The Long Point by Palomino is a sharpener that is operated manually. It provides a nice, sharp point, is easy to use and makes hardly any noise. Art teachers are fond of the X-Acto model because it can be used to sharpen colored pencils without becoming clogged.
A thermal laminator is another handy tool for teachers to keep around. Name cards and flash cards used in lower grades can be cleaned off and used again if they are laminated. The laminator made by Scotch is inexpensive and at 9" x 9" does not take up a lot of space.
The Scotch model is lightweight and portable. It features two temperature settings and utilizes a system with two rollers. It runs on batteries, so there is no excess heat. This makes is perfect for use in the classroom. Once it is turned on, it will quickly warm up to operating temperature.
The laminator made by 3M has a choice of two heat settings. This one will take between six and eight minutes to warm up and it is rated as being very dependable. At four pounds, it weighs almost 1.5 pounds lighter than the Scotch model. The 3M laminator is 120 volts and 260 watts. Both can accommodate items nine inches wide and less.

Master Teachers $26.99 The No Child Left Behind legislation, by legitimizing a stark, one-size-fits-all, industrial model of education, has denied the inherent complexity and richness of what teachers do. Discussing teaching in terms of Chaos Theory, Chapin explains that while excellent teaching may occur at the edge of chaos, it is not chaotic. There are patterns common to master teachers that connect the components of effective teaching to give meaning and stability to the classroom, allowing master teachers to get up morning after morning, and make a genuine, positive difference in students' lives. Master Teachers presents teaching as a complex, adaptive exercise undertaken at the edge of chaos where creativity and invention are maximized. |

The Diagnostic Process: A Model for Clinical Teachers $68.51 This book examining diagnosis was first published in 1985. Diagnosis is at the centre of medical practice and depends on skilled information processing and decision making. Medical students, who will spend their working lives gathering information from patients, making decisions and solving problems need to be taught the necessary techniques. One aim of the book is, therefore, to give teachers an account of some of the basic ideas which have been applied to the diagnostic process and to medical problem solving in general. Another aim is to make teachers more aware of the principles underlying their clinical work, for it has been shown repeatedly that clinicians actions do not always coincide with their teaching and there is a distinct gap between what they do and what they teach. This introduction to the fundamental concepts of information processing and decision making is written at a level which makes it appropriate reading for those who have not previously read widely in these areas. It will be of interest to clinical teachers in medical and allied health professions. Author: Balla, John I. Acting Lessons for Teachers $34.95 Acting Lessons for Teachers presents a solid theoretical foundation for the pedagogical benefits of enthusiastic teaching. The authors maintain that students learn better and misbehave less when taught by teachers who teach enthusiastically. They posit that the dynamic of the classroom is similar to that of the stage in terms of speaker-listener relationships and they demonstrate how the acting craft offers teachers a model for the skills and strategies that help convey more enthusiasm for the material, thus successfully engaging the students. This book presents concrete descriptions of the specific acting strategies that would benefit the teacher: physical and vocal animation, teacher role-playing, strategic entrances and exits, humor, props, suspense and surprise, and creative use of space. Special attention is given to the potential advantage of instructional technology as a modern-day prop. Strategies are explained in terms of their importance and ease of incorporation into the classroom. Each is proposed as a skill that can be learned by any teachers who have the desire to enliven their teaching. Student descriptions of their own experience with teachers' use of acting strategies add real examples for each lesson. Finally, testimony of award-winning classroom teachers from a variety of disciplines and age levels provides evidence of the wide and easy applicability of these strategies. |

Apologies by ESL/Efl Teachers $165.69 Today nonnative Englishspeaking ESL/EFL teachers outnumber native ones. Questions thus arise regarding nonnative Englishspeaking teachers competences. One of those competences in question is pragmatic competence. This book compares apologies by native and nonnative Englishspeaking ESL/EFL teachers. The results of the statistical analyses reveal that the two groups differ in all categories of comparison, though to different degrees. When the results of the tests are interpreted, it is observed that there are essential differences in four areas: the patterns of common strategy use, distribution of tokens across strategies, the use of individual strategies and structural characteristics of apology speech act sets. The results have implications for improving language teaching, teacher training programs and materials. In particular, these implications can help language teachers be a better language model and provide their students with necessary exposure to language use. This book should be useful to professionals in the fields of pragmatics, foreign language education and teacher training. An Examination of Science Teachers Learning $176.84 Professional development generally refers to the collection of activities that systematically increase teachers knowledge of academic subjects and advance teachers understanding of instructional strategies. Given the complexity of the reform initiatives for science education in the United States of America as set forth by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the National Science Education Standards (NRC, 1996), professional development might provide a bridge for aligning teacher practice with national standards (LoucksHorsley, 1995). However, the current model of professional growth, focused largely on expanding a repertoire of skills, is not adequate (Little, 1993). Understanding teacher learning theory and utilizing research on pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) could be the differentiating factor for science teacher professional development; if utilized in design and evaluation, they may promote both knowing science in context and knowing how to tailor science learning to the needs of students (Shulman, 1987).
